Privacy
The AirBears wireless network equipment does no data encryption of any
sort. Other users of the wireless net will be able to read data you
send or receive unless you take steps to encrypt your own data.
For example:
- Avoid reading email with software (such as Eudora)
that uses "POP" or "IMAP". A better choice is a
secure web-based email system, such as BearMail
(
https://bearmail.berkeley.edu) for UCLink users.
- Use secure shell (SSH) instead of telnet for interactive logins to
shell accounts.
- Do not provide any confidential data to a web form unless the web
site uses secure sockets layer (SSL) encryption. The URL for a secure
site will begin with
https:
Be especially careful with any service that requires a password.
Passwords are confidential; be sure the service you're using
has a secure way to log on.
